The mauser model 1898 was a recoil-operated bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92 x 57 mm cartridge.
The mauser model 1898 rifle was adopted by the german empire as gewehr 98 (abbreviated g98 or gew 98) and made the standard-issue german infantry rifle from 1898 to 1935, when it was replaced by the karabiner 98k.
