This is a very artistically formed 90 or so year old piece fo world war i german trench art. It is apparently a knife, letter opener or dagger in form, about 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) long and formed from a single piece of copper that was once part of the rotating band of an artillery shell that blew up in the trenches. An industrious german landser with lots of time on his hands flattened one end into a knife blade and soldered on teh faces of two imperial german uniform buttons to give the object its distinctive shape and appearance. On the front side of the blade he wrote the location of his foxhole or trench verdun. For those who did not get a mastesr degree in history, the world war i battle of verdun was a stalemate in which the german and french forces simply murdered each other at close range over a period of years.
